#HeritageDigitalNow: Putting the Digital into your Strategy

09:30 - 13:30

Heritage Digital’s virtual conference day will be happening on Thursday 1st October. Supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, project partners The Heritage Alliance, Charity Digital, Media Trust and Naomi Korn Associates will be hosting practical webinars and inspiring discussion on how you can start planning your organisation’s digital future now.

The full agenda will be coming soon; in the meantime these are the key topics you can expect to hear about:

  • Putting the digital into your strategy - the what, why and how
  • Creating content strategies to help you cut through the noise
  • Rights issues to consider when creating a digital strategy
  • Using audience insights to inform your decision-making
  • Examples from the heritage sector of innovative digital use on a low, or no, budget

We’ve listened to feedback on what content you want to see, and how long you want a virtual event to be, which is why our virtual ‘day’ ends at 1:30pm in order to give your eyes a rest and everyone a chance to get some lunch (unlike a face-to-face conference, you will have to make your own sandwiches!) Optional bookable roundtables with subject experts to discuss topics from the day and network with others from the heritage sector will be available from 1:30pm - booking for these will open nearer the event.

Who should attend?

This event is open to the whole of the UK heritage sector, including charities, private, independent and voluntary-run, but it will be particularly relevant for small to medium-sized organisations. Additionally, it will be primarily targeted at those just starting out in their digital strategy journey.

Digital Strategy for Heritage: What, why & how

Jonathan Chevallier, CEO, Charity Digital and Giles Woodhouse, Chief Strategy Officer, Wessex Archaeology

Research shows that many heritage organisations do not have a digital strategy and therefore are not making the most of the opportunities that digital technology provides.

With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic increasing the reliance of organisations on digital for their day to day operations and audience interaction, a digital strategy is now essential to maximise the potential for growth and impact that digital brings.

In this session, the Charity Digital CEO Jonathan Chevallier will be joined by Giles Woodhouse, Chief Strategy Officer at Wessex Archaeology to lead you through why it is so vital to have a digital strategy and how your organisation can start taking the key steps to form one. They will also be sharing some useful tips and resources that will help elevate or develop your organisation’s digital strategy.

Creating cut-through content

Andrew Davis, Keynote Speaker & Social Media Trainer

Our shift to a digital world means trying to find unique ways to tell our story online, where the potential to reach newer, broader, more diverse audiences is high.

However this also means everyone is fighting for attention, and being strategic about this in 2020 is important if you want to cut through the noise.

This workshop explores what cutting edge content looks like today, demonstrates fundamental ways to promote that content, and ultimately shows ways to get people to take action. You will leave this session with the key elements of a content plan and actionable steps.

How to use digital assets to support your strategy

Naomi Korn, Founder and Managing Director of Naomi Korn Associates and Debbie McDonnell, Senior Consultant of Naomi Korn Associates

Digital assets such as images, videos, marketing material or audio content can play an important role in a heritage organisation’s digital strategy. Whether digital resources are created by staff, suppliers, volunteers or result from digital engagement activities with your audiences, we will guide you through how to make the most of these digital assets to support your digital strategy. We will look at:

  • Understanding what digital assets you have or may need

  • Who creates the digital assets and why this matters

  • Securing the rights to the digital asset

  • Deciding how you want to use the digital assets and ways to make them available

  • Where you can find out more
