A free digital tool has been launched to help charities improve their use of data. The Data Maturity Self Assessment Tool looks at charities’ use of data and highlights their strengths and weaknesses. This is across a questionnaire covering seven broad themes: data, tools, leadership, skills, culture, uses and analysis. Charities are then graded from “unaware” and “emerging” through to “mastering” in each category. The digital tool is available in two versions. A short five minute survey gives charities a broad overview of their data use, while a fuller 20 minutes version includes additional features such as benchmarking and details on priority areas for improvement. “Data is an increasingly crucial driver of success in charities and social enterprises,” said Sian Basker, Co-Chief Executive of the tool’s designers Data Orchard. “At the very least it underpins operational and fundraising efforts. At the cutting-edge, data can be used to design more effective and efficient services, achieve better outcomes, and deliver greater impact.
“We’ve been developing our thinking on data maturity for non-profits for a long time and we couldn’t get the idea of an online tool out of our minds. We wanted the tool to be an accessible way for non-profits to understand their own journey towards data maturity, or, what we sometimes like to call, becoming data savvy.” “No matter where you are on the scale of sophistication, you can’t move forward without a realistic assessment of where you are right now. The tool is designed to help organisations ask themselves the right questions so they can figure that out.” Charities are increasingly using data to help them tell compelling stories. This includes involving service users in collecting and analysing data.
