An online portal has launched to turn unwanted clothes into cash donations for charities.
donates 13p for every kilo of clothes it receives, to the charity of the each donor’s choice. Each donation is also eligible for Gift Aid.
“1step2be was created based on in-depth market analysis which has shown us things that need to change to make clothes collections more sustainable, and easier for donors to get involved,” said 1ste2be Director and Co-owner Jakub Czernecki.
“We realised how much waste bag collections have and wanted to find a way for this plastic use to be prevented.
“1step2be doesn’t post bags through donors doors, and instead collects directly from their house meaning no unnecessary plastic. It makes it more convenient for the donors and charities using the service with them knowing exactly where the money has come from.
“Helping reduce waste is extremely important to us and turning that waste into money to help other people makes it all worthwhile.”
Three quarters of homes throw away clothes
According to 1step2be, three quarters of households throw away unwanted clothes rather than recycle them, which sees 300,000 tonnes of textiles sent to landfill instead of being recycled.
All donated items, which can include curtains, tableclothes, handbags as well as clothes, must be clean and usable. There are no fees or commissions involved, adds 1Step2Be.
