eBay for Charity breaks fundraising record for second year running

The online retail platform has announced record fundraising activity for 2019, and listed the key charity growth categories and the good causes that are benefiting.
ebay for Charity initiatives raised more than £27m for good causes in the UK last year, according to the latest figures from the online auction and retail platform.
This is a 17 per cent increase on money raised during 2018 and the second record-breaking fundraising year for the platform’s charitable arm.
During 2019 buyers and sellers on the platform raised the equivalent of £51 a minute, from more than 1.2m listings by UK charities.
The top five UK based charities in terms of funds raised are: British Heart Foundation; Sue Ryder; Cancer Research UK; The Children’s Society ; and the adult education focused RADIANT IDEA.
Fashion and collectables growth
The top category on eBay for Charity is fashion, as charities increasingly look to take their retail division online amid growing interest in second-hand clothes and vintage fashion. This category raised £6.9m in 2019.
Collectibles is another growth area, up 12 per cent in funds raised year on year and raising £6.3m 2019.
Meanwhile, home and garden goods raised £5.1m for good causes, electronics brought in £3.6m and tickets and other ‘experience’ goods raised £2m.
“It’s an immense source of pride that we’ve helped our eBay UK community raise a record-breaking £27 million by doing what we do best: providing access to a global marketplace of buyers, fee-free for our charity sellers, and rewarding our sellers generosity by matching their percentage contribution in reduced eBay fees,” said Murray Lambell, Director of UK Trading, eBay UK.
“In 2020 we are building on this momentum by forging impactful partnerships across the charity sector and continuing to grow eBay’s charitable fundraising programme for our enrolled charities.”
Last November the online auction site announced that it was ahead of schedule in its global target for fundraising.
