Giving Tuesday is a worldwide movement. Originally founded in 2012 in the US (and celebrated in the UK since 2014), it’s a day designed to inspire giving and charitable acts by harnessing the power of social media.
In 2020, Giving Tuesday broke the world record for the most money raised online for charity in a 24-hour period, with an amazing £20.2 million donated – that’s nearly £14,000 every minute!
Since 2022, Chartered Institute of Fundraising has led Giving Tuesday. In 2023 alone:
Today, Giving Tuesday takes place in over 60 countries around the world.
Think of it as the charity sector’s answer to Black Friday.
In 2024, Giving Tuesday takes place on Tuesday 3 December 2024.
There are plenty of ways charities (both big and small) can get involved. From engaging with current and new donors, raising awareness of your services, celebrating donors and volunteers, to demonstrating your impact by sharing stories from your beneficiaries.

Since it’s inception, the goal of Giving Tuesday is to encourage individuals to support causes or give back to their communities by donating time, money, or skills to charitable organisations.
Utilise your existing social media channels to share inspiring stories or behind-the-scenes footage. Or why not generate buzz and increase engagement by running a special Giving Tuesday social media contest?

Do you have engaged supporters with a small-medium size social media following? Or what about supporters with considerable sway in your local community? Existing supporters can become powerful fundraising allies. Empower them to raise funds on your behalf by providing them with the necessary tools, such as fundraising templates and training materials.
Recognise and reward supporter efforts with incentives and public acknowledgment. Not only will it motivate them to continue, it may inspire others to join the cause.

Beyond resource sharing, other potential benefits include increased reach, enhanced brand reputation, and financial support: businesses can offer direct financial contributions, matching donations, or even organising fundraising events to support your cause.
