We explore how charities can meaningfully engage with Giving Tuesday
Giving Tuesday is a day of giving, practiced across the world. It is a day that encourages everyone to support incredible causes and communities, to champion and celebrate the very act of giving.
It was created in 2012 and had grown over the last decade to become a global movement. You do not have to donate money. You can donate your time, your skills, your goods, your advocacy, or even just your support. There is no limit to the ways in which you can get involved. You could put on a cake sale, or donate that jumper to the charity shop, or pop a few quid in a ratting tin.
Here, we explore the history of Giving Tuesday and look at how charities can get involved.
Giving Tuesday started in the US. It was initially created as a way to give back on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, a day in which many US families typically eat a lot. Social media pushed the idea and soon more than 60 countries across the world celebrate Giving Tuesday.
The goal: create a wave of generosity that touches every person on the planet.
The UK has been an official partner since 2014. New charities and more people seem to arrive every year, harnessing the power of the increasingly popular global campaign. Giving Tuesday in the UK started with 800 partners – no small number – and launched with a live television interview with the Prime Minister, David Cameron.
The campaign has gone from strength to strength, with thousands of partners across the charity and business sectors now participating in the campaign. The Chartered Institute of Fundraising has led Giving Tuesday in the UK since 2022, but the campaign is owned by all the partners, all the amazing organisations that have leant their voice and advocacy.
In 2025, Giving Tuesday takes place on Tuesday 2 December 2025. And charities hoping to get involved have loads of ways to participate, including engaging with current and new donors, raising awareness of your services on a day everyone is paying attention, celebrating your staff and volunteers, and so much more. Charities should embrace the day and get involved.
The first step to involvement is becoming a partner. It’s simple and easy to sign-up and takes a matter of moments. As a partner, your charity can us the Giving Tuesday toolkit, which is packed full of incredible tips, templates, and social media assets, among other things. You can use the Giving Tuesday logo and participate in various events and skills-building webinars.
But charities can go much further. Here we look at how you can get involved.
Giving Tuesday is about encouraging individuals to support causes or give back to their communities by donating time, money, or skills to charitable organisations. So charities need to be proactive and loud in that encouragement.
You should use existing social media platforms to share inspiring stories, post some behind-the-scenes footage, or perhaps even run a special contest. You can use the #GivingTuesday and other trending hashtags to increase your visibility and converse with other charities on the subject.
You can reference the Giving Tuesday campaign, too, using any of their unique handles:
And get your email involved. You could, for example, craft a specific Giving Tuesday newsletter for your supporters. Be sure to personalise your messages by tailoring emails to specific donor segments and create urgency by using limited time offers or matching gift opportunities.
Existing supporters are always powerful fundraising allies. Charities can empower them to raise funds on their behalf by providing them with the necessary tools, taking full advantage of all the great resources Giving Tuesday provides.
You should recognise and reward their efforts through public acknowledgment, once again making the most of your marketing capabilities. Not only will that motivate them to continue fundraising, but it may also inspire others to join the cause.
And think about partners: the other charities and businesses that could help. For charities partnering with other charities, pooling resources such as expertise, volunteers, and technology, and cross promoting each other’s Giving Tuesday efforts on social media can significantly increase visibility and engagement – it will likely result in higher donations, too.
A collaborative approach can be beneficial for charity and business partnerships too. Beyond resource sharing, other potential benefits include increased reach, enhanced brand reputation, and financial support: businesses can offer direct financial contributions, matching donations, or even organising fundraising events to support your cause.

Giving Tuesday provides a platform to charities of all shapes and sizes. It gives you the opportunity to make a serious and significant impact. Remember, as we’ve explored above, to engage your supporters, tell compelling stories, and make it easy for anyone and everyone to donate.
