How to choose the right Microsoft Nonprofit Subscription

With so many options available, it can be hard to know which Microsoft Nonprofit subscription is suitable for your organisation.
Have you used a Microsoft product at work today?
Whether it’s as simple as checking emails in Outlook, collaborating on a document in SharePoint or getting some work done with the traditional Office suite of solutions (Excel, PowerPoint and Word - the three amigos!) it’s hard to picture our working day without these solutions.
And the switch to remote working has brought newer features to the fore - Microsoft Teams has reached a new level of ubiquity for its instant messaging chat, video conferencing capabilities and quick-and-easy file sharing.
These Microsoft products allow charities throughout the world to carry out the day to day work that drives their important missions. In the wake of COVID-19, a combination of these solutions has empowered charities to make a smooth transition to a remote working model, as they continue to offer their vital services amidst a climate of challenges and disruptions
Most of us probably take access to these solutions as a given. But charity digital leaders will need to make decisions when it comes to sourcing software and licenses for employees. There are a number of Microsoft products available at a discounted rate through the Charity Digital Product Platform and Exchange Programme. These can allow organisations (particularly smaller charities with limited budgets) to gain access to important software at affordable rates.

What Microsoft 365 subscriptions are available to Nonprofits?
Microsoft offer a tiered system of subscriptions, with more expensive subscriptions proving access to more features.
All paid tiers of subscription include the traditional Office programmes of Word, Excel and PowerPoint. These are now available online in a cloud-based format, with SharePoint integration as opposed to traditional desktop software.
Be aware, these apps are not available with a Microsoft Office Basic subscription. This free of charge service provides cloud-based access to instant messaging, HD video conferencing, and 1 TB personal file storage and sharing.
Microsoft 365 Nonprofit F3 is a basic solution that is designed specifically for charities. It is available at a discounted charity rate of £1.90 per user per month.
This subscription is suitable for nonprofits of any size with "firstline workers" or volunteers who don’t need Office desktop applications. It provides cloud-based access to Office applications with email, instant messaging, HD video conferencing, 2 GB personal file storage and sharing, and other services. Microsoft 365 Nonprofit F3 has a number of security features, including Azure Active Directory Premium P1, Azure Information Protection Premium P1, Microsoft Advanced Threat Analytics, and Microsoft Intune.
A subscription to Microsoft 365 Standard is available at a discounted charity rate of £2.30 per user per month. This is suitable for small and mid-sized nonprofits with up to 300 users that need Office desktop applications.
Office desktop applications for PC and Mac are included, as well as apps for tablets and phones. It also includes access to Exchange, OneDrive, Microsoft Teams and SharePoint.
Microsoft 365 Business Premium is available at a discounted charity rate of £3.80 per user per month. This includes all the features of Microsoft 365 Standard, as well as a simplified management console for setting device and data policies. This subscription provides cloud-based access to Office applications, email, instant messaging, HD video conferencing, 1 TB personal file storage and sharing, security features, and more.
Larger Nonprofits that require desktop-based apps may be better suited to Microsoft 365 Nonprofit E3. It includes all the features of Microsoft 365 Nonprofit F3 as well as access to desktop apps and enterprise-level security. If you require a phone system as well then Microsoft 365 Nonprofit E5 will be the subscription for you!
