Our new survey aims to discover how charities are affected by digital exclusion and what the sector is doing to tackle it
Digital exclusion affects one in seven people in the UK, according to research from Deloitte. This means that between 13 and 19 million people aged 16 and over are in “digital poverty”, unable to interact with the online world fully.
In a world where we use digital for everything from banking to healthcare, being digitally excluded can impact every area of our lives, creating a barrier to accessing information and basic services.
Poor internet access, limited access to devices, and training to use them can exacerbate existing problems such as poverty and loneliness. And, for charities, it excludes people from accessing digital services when they may be most in need of them.
To better understand how digital exclusion affects the charity sector, Charity Digital has launched a survey, with the aim of uncovering the specific challenges charities face in delivering digital services and using digital in their own operations.
As champions of digital in the charity sector, we recognise how transformative technology can be in helping charities to achieve their mission. It can help us raise more money, deliver more services, free up their time, and much, much more. We want to ensure that everyone in the UK can make the most out of digital and find ways for the charity sector to make the online world a more inclusive place.
UPDATE: Our report, ‘Digital inclusion in the UK charity sector’, uncovers charity practitioners’ attitudes towards digital inclusion, including the challenges charities face in reaching out to service users and how they are making the most of the digital technology they use.
