We explore the reasons why charity trustees need to take a lead on cyber security and provide tips on how they can do so
Trustees, we have a bone to pick with you. The State of Cyber Security in the UK Charity Sector report, conducted in partnership with the National Cyber Security Centre, found some troubling findings around cyber security and who leads on it within charities. In fact, there appears to be a leadership gap.
Despite nearly three in five managers saying their organisation had a cyber resilience strategy, 78% of trustees said the opposite, that they didn’t have one. Trustees were more likely to say this than any other job role, except directors and volunteers. Almost one in five (18%) also did not know what cyber security software had been implemented in the last 18 months.
Yet these are exactly the decisions trustees should be leading on. And it is clearly a problem that trustees are aware of, too. Two in five trustees told the report that their organisation’s leadership were not skilled in matters of cyber security – again, more than any other position in the charity sector.
