Digitally mature charities are four times more likely to achieve their mission goals. Learn more now about how to get started with improving your organisation’s digital maturity in marketing
Digital maturity is the ability to adapt and respond to technological developments as they arise. It is an ongoing process which organisations of any size can work towards, and it involves both having the correct technology for a job and employing or training people to have the appropriate skills to use it.
Salesforce’s 2022 ‘Nonprofit Trends Report’ found that only 12% of non-profits were “digitally mature”. These organisations were more likely than others in the sector to report highly motivated employees, healthy organisational cultures, and lower levels of employee burnout.
This was true for both small and big charities. Digitally mature organisations were twice as likely to see improvement in operational efficiencies, regardless of their revenue, headcount, or geographic location.
As stated, these charities were also four times more likely than others to achieve their mission goals.
Engaging stakeholders through digital marketing is a process which can boost awareness for your cause, raise funds, increase volunteers, and produce greater impact
It can involve digital tools in a range of ways, from building a charity website, to using social media and email marketing platforms
Digital technology can also improve the efficiency of marketing, including by automating processes like donor segmentation for more targeted communications
But knowing which digital tools to use, when, and how can be a problem when strategising with limited time and resources. In order to invest in the technology they need in the future, charities must first take stock of where they’re at with digital now.
In 2022, the Charity Digital Skills Report found that as many as 55% of UK charity professionals were not using any digital maturity diagnostic tools or best practice frameworks.
The 2023 Nonprofit Digital Marketing Maturity Assessment from Salesforce, which is free to download, can be useful on a strategic level by auditing a charity’s current digital maturity and enabling decision-makers to move forward with a clear path in mind.
The questions in the assessment cover charity strategy, stakeholders, technology, operations, and overall digital maturity. By answering, organisations will be given a digital maturity score, placing them in one of three categories: aspirational, experienced, or expert.
Each of these categories are then recommended resources which can help them improve their organisation’s digital maturity level or provide inspiration for the future.
The assessment is designed to be a starting point for charities to discuss and progress their digital strengths and weaknesses, bringing teams together around common goals.
